An accessory dwelling unit is a compact and self-contained living space that is typically situated on the same property as a primary residence. You might know them by another name: “casitas,” “granny flats,” “in-law suites,” or “backyard cottages.” They are a versatile and useful housing option, recently popular due to their potential to address multiple challenges in the housing market.

They come in various forms, including converted garages, basement apartments, or standalone structures. They can be attached to the main residence, as in a basement suite, or they can be completely independent. They also must have all the amenities one expects from a home: kitchen, washroom, and independent water and electrical systems. Often, they have separate entrances and parking accommodations. In California, an ADU can be as large as 1200 square feet. Custom ADUs can be built closely to the customer’s specifications, but we also offer beautiful pre-approved ADUs.

For those with smaller properties, another option is the Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU), which can be as big as 500 square feet and can share systems with the main dwelling. For those with limited space and funds, this is an attractive option to expand one’s properties.
